Can Invisalign Close Gaps?

They say that ‘a smile is a curve that sets everything straight’ and while that saying shouldn’t be taken too literally, you can probably get an idea of what that particular saying is all about.

Despite smiles generally being associated with positivity, some people out there are actually very self-conscious about their smiles, or more specifically, their teeth.

If your teeth are giving you cause for concern, you may wish to look into the possibility of the hugely popular Invisalign treatments offered by dentists up and down the country. Invisalign treatments are ideal for people looking for a discreet way of straightening their teeth without the need for invasive braces.

But what about if you’ve gaps in your mouth? Can Invisalign close gaps? Well, that’s what we’re going to be looking at below. Here’s a detailed look at what Invisalign is, how it works, and whether or not it can close gaps.

What is Invisalign and how does it work?

Invisalign is a hugely popular teeth-straightening treatment that has revolutionised the world of orthodontics.

Invisalign offers a discreet and hugely effective way of straightening the teeth in a manner which is far, far less-invasive than old school metal braces.

Invisalign was developed in the 1990s by a college student who was looking for a discreet way of straightening the teeth without making it so obvious to other people. Conceived in a college dorm room in 1996, by 1998 Invisalign was FDA approved and dentists just as ourselves started utilizing it as part of our treatment plans.

Invisalign trays are clear and transparent which means it is virtually impossible to see them being worn. As an added benefit, the trays are removable as well, so wearers can put them in and take them out as they see fit.

Invisalign uses cutting edge computer technology to take the final position of your teeth when fully straight, before mapping out a treatment plan designed to gradually align the teeth over the course of several weeks/months.

Can Invisalign close gaps?

We know that Invisalign can straighten the teeth, but can it also close gaps? Well, the answer is yes. Invisalign can indeed close gaps very effectively.

How long does Invisalign take to close gaps?

Per aligner, Invisalign offers a 0.2mm movement.

If you happen to have a 2.0mm gap between your teeth, it will take roughly 3 and a half months for the Invisalign treatment to fully close the gap.

What size gap can Invisalign fix?

We’ve already seen that Invisalign, per aligner, will offer a movement of 0.2mm but precisely what size gap can an Invisalign retainer fix?

Well, Invisalign can close gaps of up to 6mm in size. Anything larger than 6mm and you will need to speak to your dentist and look for an alternative treatment as the gap is deemed too large and will therefore render the Invisalign treatment ineffective.

How many Invisalign trays does it take to close a gap?

In truth we can’t give you an exact answer to that question because it would be like answering the question of how long a piece of string is.

Each person’s body is different, each person will heal differently, and each person will have different sized gaps.

Per aligner, Invisalign moves 0.2mm. So, if you have a 0.6mm gap, you would need to wear 3 Invisalign trays. Just to give you a rough idea of how many you’ll need however, with mild cases you’d need roughly 5 trays, whereas for large gaps and complex cases, you’d need over 26 trays.
