Is Invisalign Better than Braces? Which Should You Choose?

Braces vs Invisalign - An Overview

When your dentist recommends considering having your teeth straightened, you may be considering the option of traditional braces versus Invisalign clear aligners. Both methods are designed to straighten teeth, improve your smile, and improve overall oral health.

Traditional metal braces are the more well-known method. They are metal brackets attached to each tooth and connected by a wire which is gradually tightened to move teeth into the proper alignment.

In contrast, Invisalign is a type of orthodontic treatment that straightens teeth without the need of traditional metal braces. Invisalign involves wearing a set of customizable aligners that gently move teeth into the appropriate alignment over time. This system has been around for about 15 years.

But is Invisalign better than braces? Well the short answer is: it depends.

Braces vs Invisalign - Advantages and Disadvantages

Both of these methods of teeth straightening have their own benefits and drawbacks. It may be helpful to consider the advantages and disadvantages of each to make an informed decision.

1. Number of Dental Visits

After having your initial appointment, you will need to see an orthodontist every 4 weeks for standard metal braces. This can be variable depending on your mouth's anatomy as well as other factors.

When it comes to Invisalign, you will see a dentist every 6-8 weeks. This reduction  in dental visits for patients with Invisalign compared to metal braces is a significant factor in patient’s choosing Invisalign..

2. Permanent or Removable

Braces are firmly fixed to each tooth. Once they are applied, they remain in place throughout the entire duration of your treatment. Braces cannot be removed during activities and will remain in place until they are removed. An orthodontist will be required for application and removal.

In contrast, Invisalign uses a system of clear aligners that you can remove. In fact, it's recommended that you remove them when eating and drinking hot fluids. Some people may prefer to remove them occasionally for meetings, professional photos, or other events where they might not want the aligners to show.

3. Limitations of Treatments

Braces were the original method of straightening teeth and they've remained the primary choice for teeth straightening with good reason. If you have complex orthodontic issues you may only have the option to have metal braces. Deep overbites and other significant teeth alignment problems may only be fixed with metal braces. They can also achieve alignment faster than other methods.

Invisalign is best suited for mild or moderate orthodontic problems such as crooked or rotated teeth, gaps in teeth, and overcrowding. Significant problems may not be likely to be resolved with Invisalign and your dentist may advise traditional braces for this reason.

Braces vs Invisalign - Treatment and Care

Both methods of teeth straightening come with different care requirements. To get an idea of what to expect, these are the primary care requirements for both types of teeth straightening methods.

Braces

As braces are attached to your teeth and cannot be removed, the care for braces tends to be more extensive. You should brush the brackets thoroughly while cleaning teeth at least twice a day. Flossing should be done on a daily basis. However, flossing may also need to be done more often if you get food stuck in the brackets or if gum inflammation occurs.

The wires of the braces can make brushing and flossing more challenging. You may require a special interdental brush to get into the spaces that are difficult to reach. Patients report that they spend more time on oral care with braces.

Invisalign

When it comes to Invisalign, the upkeep is not as extensive as metal braces, you still have to maintain them properly for the best results. When you remove the aligners from your mouth, it's recommended that you rinse them with lukewarm water to prevent bacteria from building up.

You will also have to brush both your teeth and the aligners twice a day, similar to braces. When removing the trays in the morning and evening, brush the trays with a soft brush and soap, rinsing with warm water.

Avoid putting hot water on the trays as this will lead to damaging the aligners over time. You should also clean your teeth after each meal to avoid staining or trapping particles. This may be challenging for some people who may not be able to clean their teeth after every meal. If you don't clean your teeth after eating, any residual food in your teeth can stain the aligners.

Invisalign vs Braces - What Should You Choose?

In general, Invisalign is often the preferred method of teeth straightening by many patients, as Invisalign is more discreet and comfortable than traditional braces. The ability to remove the aligners is also a big advantage for many people.

However, If you have significant dental problems that require more extensive movement of your teeth or mouth, Invisalign clear aligners simply may not be an option. They may also take longer to produce the desired results.

Invisalign is generally more cost effective than traditional braces.

In contrast, braces are the oldest method of straightening teeth. They are known to be effective and also appropriate for more severe dental problems and alignment concerns. Your dentist may recommend them based on your personal dental needs.
